What is Conversion Rate Optimisation (CRO)?

What exactly is a conversion?
Well, that depends on your goals. What are you hoping to achieve when a customer visits your site? Maybe you’re hoping for them to fill out an enquiry form, or potentially you’re looking for the visitor to purchase a product from your online store. These can be split in to two types of conversions; Micro & Macro. Here are a few more examples:

How we do it
Before making any changes to the user experience, it’s important to first understand who your users are, how they came to find you, and how they navigate your website once they’re there. There’s two ways of gaining this understanding:

- Where visitors enter your site i.e. which webpage they land on first
- Which areas/features of the website do they engage with, i.e., where on a page do users spend their time looking at/clicking on
- How they got there i.e. what link/ channel did they use to navigate to your site
- Which devices and browsers they use
- Who your customers are (age, demographic, interests etc.)
- Where users drop off i.e. at what point in the buying funnel do users leave your site
Some-times the “big data” tells you where to look but not what to see. This is where having real humans testing your website can refine this data to tell you exactly where you’re going wrong. This user understanding, which can come in the form of on-site surveys, satisfaction feedback, and user testing, can help you gain information such as:
- Why did visit? What was it that made the users originally visit your site? Why did they decide to visit a particular page?
- What is it about your site that makes it different to your competitors? Why would they be unlikely or likely to convert based on what they’ve seen?
- How exactly do they define and describe your website & services, is it a stress-free experience or does it make their blood boil? Would they be likely to recommend your site to their friends? In essence, how do they talk about your website & your company?
